The BWA often gets queries about standards for various work carried out in the groundwater industry so here is an update of what is available from the SABS.

SANS 10299: Development, maintenance and management of groundwater resources

This standard was the result of a project initiated by the BWA in 1996 to have a set of standards for borehole construction. It replaced the BWA's booklet 'The Minimum Code of Practice for Borehole Construction and Pump Installation'.

SANS 10299 standards are reviewed every five years by a committee and are only available from the SABS.

SANS 10299 consists of the following parts:

  • Part 0: Glossary of terms.

  • Part 1: The location and siting of water boreholes.

  • Part 2: The design, construction and drilling of boreholes.

  • No Part 3.

  • Part 4: Test-pumping of water boreholes.

  • Part 5: The design, selection and performance of pumping equipment for production boreholes.

  • Part 6: The installation and commissioning of pumping equipment for production boreholes.

  • Part 7: The rehabilitation of water boreholes.

  • Part 8: The management of water boreholes.

  • Part 9: The decommissioning of water boreholes.

The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) is a statutory body that was established in terms of the Standards Act, 1945 (Act No. 24 of 1945) and continues to operate in terms of the latest edition of the Standards Act, 2008 (Act No. 8 of 2008) as the national standardisation institution in South Africa. It is mandated to develop, promote and maintain South African National Standards (SANS).
