The ‘duckbill’ spillway developed, so-called due to its shape, not only allowed for the dam’s existing storage capacity to be increased by 25%, it also significantly increased the discharge capacity of the spillway so as to boost the dam’s safety by preventing overtopping.

JG Afrika, a leading firm of consulting engineers, is helping its young engineers and technicians attain professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). Eleven candidates were successfully registered as professional engineers recently: six from the firm’s Cape Town office, two from its Pietermaritzburg branch and two from Johannesburg. A further three candidates are currently preparing for their registrations this year.
NGWA best suggested practices (BSP) are designed to aid groundwater professionals at industry job sites. They are not standards, but practices that have been demonstrated to show superior results. They are prepared by a consensus of groundwater professionals from around the country.
